THE F STORY

The Good Friend

I’m February, the second month of the year. I’m the second month,

right after January, and that’s where my problem starts. In fact,
I have a few problems. The first one is that people are always

forgetting my first “r”! So what if January only has one? I am the

5 second month, and I have two! It’s my fourth letter, and it makes me

very angry to see people spelling it wrong! Did you know that I am the
only month with two “r”s? If I had a face, you would see how red it

gets every time I find a spelling mistake in my name! It’s not fair!

Another problem I have is that I finish before everyone else! Once in

10 four years I get an extra day, but nothing about this is free! I have to
leap for one more day, and even then, I have two days less than my

oldest brother January. He thinks it’s funny! I fly by so fast! It’s not

fair!!!

I only have one good friend. Fred, the groundhog. He is my favorite
15 friend. He is nicer than my family. Every winter, he takes some food

and goes to sleep under the ground. He stays five feet under the

ground until February 2nd. Then, even if it’s cold, he comes up to

see if there is a shadow in front of him. If he can’t find a shadow, we
know that the flowers will come out soon. People want to find out

20 if spring is coming, so everybody waits for February 2. It makes me

feel full of joy. I forget all my other problems!

That’s me, February. The short month with two “r”s and a best friend
who is a groundhog. Nice to meet you!
