Prologue
Patagonia: The Cretaceous Era
T he smell of death was in the air. It wasn’t the putrid
stench of a decaying carcass that had been lying out in
the sun too long, but rather the delicious scent of an animal
that had died just a few hours before and hadn’t yet begun to
decompose. It was so faint it could only be detected by the
creatures that fed on the flesh of the dead. Insects, scavengers,
vermin and opportunistic predators smelled the body of the life-
less, long-necked dinosaur and began to gather and nibble at
its ample carcass almost immediately after it took its last
breath.
The female Tyrannosaurus rex was a quarter of a mile
away when she first smelled the carcass and began to lead her
