And Kick Your Own Damn Ass

I don’t care what you believe. I don’t care how many years you have
lifted weights. This book is your guide to understanding the factors
that will influence the results you can achieve from progressive weight
training, including how to realistically assess your “genetic” potential,
understanding what is achievable, setting realistic goals, and the factors
that will affect how you can reach those goals.

In order to do that, we will untangle the threads that complicate
weight training and pull information from bodybuilding, powerlifting,
and Olympic weightlifting. This book covers these subjects and many
more because they are absolutely necessary in order to understand
the principles that govern working out with weights in a manner that
produces safe results. The fact that there is little cross-pollination
among these activities shows how regressive the whole activity is.

Because many of you come to this book with a background in weight
training you may be looking for validation of ideas and concepts you are
already familiar with. And you will find some! But you will also be exposed
to ideas that may differ dramatically from traditional orthodoxy. In
those instances, I urge you to maintain an open mind.

For generations writers hungry to say something new, stretched the
truth in ways that are highly misleading. Misinformation about exercise
and weight training has been passed down over the years until it became
dogma. And it continues on Youtube.

Highly successful athletes who are asked to share how they did it are
usually born with unusual abilities and tend to underestimate the
difficulty of things that came easily to them. Their advice may not apply
to the rest of us who do not have the physical gifts that they do.

In short, what people believe to be true about weight training comes
with a lot of baggage both seen and unseen.
